Market Square
Kilrush
Co Clare
V15 HE28
Description
Crotty’s is truly one of Ireland’s iconic landmark public houses on the Wild Atlantic Way. This three-storey property made up of the amalgamation of “Crotty’s” and “Maggie May’s” also includes 7 ensuite guest bedrooms, reception rooms and a commercial kitchen. It has been at the heart of music and social life in the market square in Kilrush for over 100 years. In addition to the ground floor public house there is a full kitchen, entertainment rooms, and seven ensuite guest bedrooms on the floors above. This remarkable property is steeped in history from it’s early transition to a pub from a hardware store having been taken over by Miko Crotty in about 1920. It is well known as a stopping point for good food, accommodation, music and a warm welcome since that time. Guests over the years have included Oliver Reed, Richard Burton and Cyril Cusack.
The main bar, features a pitch pine counter, a tiny frost-glass snug and a rare plate glass Smithwick’s Ale & Barleywine mirror. Bundles of old 1950s invoices hang upon wires in the front window. To the left, the old CIE storeroom makes for an intimate seating area beneath posters for the once esteemed Kilrush Opera Society. At the back left is the Crotty’s old kitchen, complete with Vice-Regal stove, which runs into the old Tap Room at back right. The walls are bedecked in fascinating memorabilia relating to the Crotty family as well as posters the Lisdoonvarna Festivals, The Chieftains at the Sorbonne and miscellaneous Fleadh Ceols. Miko’s wife Elizabeth (Lizzie) Crotty was a well known Lachenal concertina player and was made famous by broadcaster Ciarán Mac Mathúna after recording her play.
The property is full of character and has many nooks and snugs for customers to enjoy their visit. The property is set over three floors and the ground floor has two access doors onto the square for the public house. There is a third door onto the street giving access to a stairs that services the guest accommodation on the first and second floor. There is a bar counter area at each side of the ground floor public house. The building is a Heritage building and we understand that grants may be available from Clare County council towards it’s maintenance.
