As published by Drogheda Life, the Boyneside Trail is an ambitious project to build a 17 km cycleway route from the Maiden Tower at Mornington the Bru na Boinne Interpretation Centre.  There will be a public meeting on Wed 11 October 7:30pm in the Westcourt Hotel, Drogheda to update everyone on the progress to date, the challenges and opportunities ahead and an action plan to get the route built.   To date the Boyneside Trail have assisted in lobbying the National Transport Authority, in conjunction with Meath County Council, for funding for the route from the end of the ramparts to the Oldbridge Estate. They have completed a feasibility study looking at the proposed route from Maiden Tower to Drogheda. They have met with all known landowners, including Drogheda Port Company who have been very supportive of the project.

In February 2017 Meath County Council appointed consulting engineers DBFL to complete all necessary plans and assessments to bring the route from Maiden Tower at Mornington to Drogheda and the Drogheda Town links to planning.

It is critical that this planning work is completed on time, so that the project is available for capital funding.

According to organiser Geoff Fitzpatrick “We are competing with other regions in Ireland such as Mullingar/Athlone and Waterford/Dungarvan, projects that have been completed in the recent past.

It’s up to Drogheda to put its case forward and ensure we are in the pot for national funding. If we are serious about building sustainable tourism and creating jobs this needs to happen.”

All local TDs and Councillors in Louth and East Meath have been invited along with The National Transport Authority, Boyne Valley Tourism, Failte Ireland, Meath and Louth County Councils.

Peter Monahan, Chairman said, “The momentum on this project needs to be maintained and we need commitment from all concerned to make this happen. It is critical that we get the Mornington to Drogheda route to planning stage, so that, it is a shovel ready project available for capital funding.”
