It was from the waters of Lough Swilly, in the immediate vicinity of the Ballyboe, the Flight of the Earls sailed into exile and oblivion, which marked the overthrow of the Gaelic nation in its last great stronghold. A small fishing vessel sailed to this sheltered port in the early days of September 1607 for the purpose of carrying O’Neill, O’Donnell and their immediate family and friends from the danger of imprisonment. In all, 99 of them, boarded the ship and sailed from Lough Swilly on September 14th and 14 days at sea, before landing in France. A little note of a great historic event, which changed forever the course of Irish history.
