The last chieftain to have his land confiscated in the plantation of Ulster (1608) was Cahir Rua O Dochartaigh with one of his strongest castles being on picturesque Inch Island in Inishowen. The castle is now in ruins although well worth a visit. Approximately one hundred years later Inch House was built on the opposite side on the island and was possibly used as a centre of administration by the Alexander family who had established a fishing business there. During the civil war in the 1920’s the house was surrendered by the republican side to the Free State troops.

For many years Inch House was the private hunting lodge for Lord and Lady Templemore. In the years following the foundation of the Free State, it managed a thread factory and a deep litter chicken farm. It was used for flower production on a commercial basis and as a private home in the eighties. In the nineties it became the O Dochartaigh Genealogy Centre.

Inch House was built in the Queen Anne style, with many of the original features still in existence such as corner fireplaces and bolection panelling. The gardens are adorned with mature trees from a bygone age; lime, pineapple scented magnolia and overhanging rhododendron to mention a few. Across the courtyard lies the beautiful cut stone stable block, believed to have been built for staff and soldiers at the time of the Napoleonic emergency. During renovation the current owner discovered many beer bottles underneath a basement window, dating from 1670 to 1730 and very likely to have come from ships visiting the area at the time. Facing the morning sunrise you can observe the seagulls swoop and call across the waters of Lough Swilly. On the far side of these waters the road from Derry leads to Buncrana and Malin Head. From an upstairs window, experience the northern lights, or watch the yachts set sail from Fahan. It’s easy to see why this site was chosen.

During the early stages of the Peace Process Inch House played a part by hosting several meetings between politicians and clergy. One of the finest events was a lunch attended by senior clergy with guest of honour, Mr John Hume. The house became a focal point for American visitors throughout the Peace Process with many visiting privately. Famous amongst these was Newt Gingrich Speaker of the House. Inch House was also the set location for ITV’s filming of Agnes Jones.

Whilst often referred to as Inch Island, Inch is not an island in the real sense as it is accessed / approached by a man-made causeway. Located within Lough Swilly, one of the deepest inlets in Europe, Inch is located a short distance off the R238 leading from Derry City to Buncrana and onwards to Malin Head the most northerly point in the Island of Ireland. Inch is a wildfowl sanctuary and has a large man-made lake filled with swans, geese and many other species of bird including greenland white-fronted goose, whooper swan and greylag goose. Inch wildfowl reserve features a 8km walk, catering for outdoor recreational activity including walking, running and cycling. The site includes two carparks, seating, viewpoints and a number of bird hides open to the public. The scenic pathway follows around the lake edge and offers panoramic views of the surrounding agricultural landscape and wetlands. Inch is around 13 sq km (8.07 miles) in area and includes the ruins of a 15th Century castle which once was the home of the O’Doherty Clan of Inishowen.

Inch is within easy reach of City of Derry Airport offering regular flights to selected United Kingdom and European Airports whilst Belfast International and City of Belfast Airports are within easy reach partly by motorway.
