With interest rates at historic lows, monthly repayments on a new home loan can cost you less than rent, especially with the added advantage of the Help to Buy scheme.

For example, consider a new 3 bedroom suburban home priced at €350,000 where the buyer has paid a 5% deposit of €17,500 and received the 5% Help to Buy tax rebate. The remaining amount of €315,000 on a 35-year mortgage at 2.3% interest would see monthly repayments of €1,093. The same home could cost €1,950 per month to rent. That’s a saving of over €850 per month.
